Working in Redwood City

Building in Redwood City, one yard at a time.

Redwood City stretches from the Bay shore at Redwood Shores across the flat valley floor to hillsides toward the Santa Cruz Mountains. Neighborhoods include Redwood Oaks, Palm Park, Farm Hill, Roosevelt, Mount Carmel and Downtown.

The city averages about 20 inches of rain a year, with December through February the wettest months and April through September mostly dry. A base that drains well matters most in the wet months, so we build every one to shed water.

Before you build

What to know before you build in Redwood City.

Local ground, local rules and local habits that shape a good paver, concrete or fence job.

Front-yard fences stay low

In a required front yard, solid fences are limited to 3 feet and combination solid and open fences to 5 feet. Chain link above 3 feet is prohibited in residential districts. Nothing solid over 3 feet is allowed in the vision triangle near corners and driveways.

Ground and liquefaction

The city's draft hazard plan rates areas around US 101, Redwood Creek and most of Redwood Shores as very high for liquefaction. Valley-floor soil in the area is alluvial clay. Both are reasons we check the ground before we set a base.

Paving rules

Paving one foot or less above finished grade has no minimum setback. Zoning also points to minimum pervious area rules and a stormwater treatment section for larger projects, so ask the city about yours.

Hillside neighborhoods

The city's hazard plan puts several western hillside neighborhoods in wildland-urban interface areas, and state wildfire construction rules apply to new buildings in High and Very High zones.
